Mythology Summary
Jupiter (Iuppiter) is the Roman sky father and the head of the state religion: the god of the thunderbolt, of the oath and of the law that binds a people. His temple on the Capitoline, dedicated in the first year of the republic and shared with Juno and Minerva, was where the triumph ended and where Rome kept its covenant with the gods. His priest was the flamen Dialis, hedged about with taboos, and the Ides of every month were his.
Modern Practice
Jupiter is called on when an undertaking needs to be sworn to rather than merely started - vows, offices, treaties, public work - and for the thunder's own favour before a large and visible act. His practice is formal: speak the promise aloud, name what will be owed, and keep it.
