Mythology Summary

Montu is the falcon war god of Armant, Thebes, Medamud and Tod, originally a manifestation of the scorching heat of Ra and later the embodiment of the king's conquering vitality. He is 'Horus of the Strong Arm', and he manifests as the Buchis, the white black-snouted bull of Armant; Montu-Ra was a supreme god in the Middle Kingdom, when the Theban kings took his name in Mentuhotep, 'Montu is satisfied'. Amun later displaced him as the god of Thebes.

Modern Practice

Montu is called before a contest, a campaign or any trial of strength, and the practice is the training done beforehand rather than the prayer at the start. The offering is the first share of the victory.
