Mythology Summary

Aegir is the sea, a giant who keeps a hall beneath the waves and hosts the gods at the feast where Loki's flyting happens (Lokasenna). He brews for them, and Thor has to fetch the giant Hymir's cauldron before there is ale enough for all (Hymiskvida); his wife is Ran and their nine daughters are the waves.

Modern Practice

Aegir is the host's god: modern practice calls him when a table is set for many, and the first cup is poured into the sea or into the ground before anyone drinks. Sailors and brewers keep him, and the feast itself is the rite.
