Mythology Summary

Ahura Mazda, 'the Wise Lord', is the supreme god of the Gathas of Zarathushtra (Yasna 28-53) and of the later Avesta: uncreated, the source of asha (truth and cosmic order) against druj (the lie), and the maker of the good creation. The Avesta reaches him through the Amesha Spentas, the six 'bounteous immortals' who are at once his attributes and his agents, and the Pahlavi books (Bundahishn, Denkard) develop the cosmogony around him. Zoroastrian worship is aniconic, conducted before a sacred fire, and the winged disc or winged figure of Achaemenid reliefs is often called his image although the identification is disputed.

Modern Practice

The practice that belongs to him is the tradition's own: prayer from the Avesta, good thoughts, good words and good deeds, care of the sacred fire, and the discipline of truth against the lie. Modern occultists who approach him as a Jupiter or Sun power are using a Western overlay, not the Zoroastrian relation.
