Hathor is the Egyptian goddess of love, joy, music and the Milky Way, and a mother-figure to the pharaoh. She is also the eye of Ra in her fierce form, and as Sekhmet she nearly destroys humanity before being made drunk on beer dyed red. She receives the dead as Lady of the West.
Modern Practice
Hathor is called on for love, for music and dance, for the recovery of pleasure after grief, and for the safe passage of the dead. Her rites are loud and sweet — sistrum, drum, milk and beer — and her warning is that joy is not the same as harmlessness.
