Mythology Summary
Fortuna is the Roman goddess of fortune, shown with a rudder, a globe and a wheel — the last of which turns without warning. She is not justice and not providence: she is the shape of chance, and Rome kept her temple because chance is a power worth respecting.
Modern Practice
Fortuna is called on at a beginning, at a gamble, and before a journey. Her practice is to name what is actually within your control and then to make the offering anyway; her caution is that luck is a force and not a reward.
