Asclepius is the Greek god of medicine, taught by the centaur Chiron and killed by Zeus' thunderbolt for raising the dead. His sanctuary at Epidaurus was a healing hospital where the sick slept and received the god's dream-prescription, and his serpent-entwined staff is still the sign of medicine.
Modern Practice
Asclepius is called on by healers and by the sick: for diagnosis, for the discipline of a treatment, and for the dream that names what is wrong. His cult was never about miracles alone — the inscription at Epidaurus records the cure and the fee.
