Mythology Summary

Nanna, or Sin, is the Mesopotamian moon god who crosses the night sky in a reed boat and measures the months, the father of Shamash and Inanna. His crescent is the measure of time itself and his wisdom is the kind that comes from counting.

Modern Practice

Nanna is honoured at the new moon with offerings at the temple roof, and his practice is the calendar kept. He is the moon of the record rather than the moon of the dream.
