Mythology Summary

Dyaus Pita is the Vedic sky father, the husband of Prithvi (Earth) and father of the gods, the Indian cognate of Greek Zeus, Roman Jupiter and Germanic Tiwaz. Already fading by the time of the Rigveda, he survives chiefly in the compound Dyavaprithvi ('Heaven and Earth'), invoked as the universal parents.

Modern Practice

Invoked, usually with Prithvi, as the ancestral sky and the blessing of the heavens.
