Mythology Summary

Njord is the Vanir god of the sea and of wealth, who came to Asgard as a hostage and stayed, and whose marriage to the giantess Skadi fails because neither will leave home. He is the harbour rather than the storm: the safe return and the profit that follows it.

Modern Practice

Njord is called on before a voyage, at the opening of a harbour, and for honest trade. His practice is tidal and practical, and his offerings are made at the water's edge.
