Mythology Summary

Indra is the Vedic king of the gods, who splits the serpent Vritra with his thunderbolt and releases the waters. He is the storm and the rain and the drinker of soma, and in the later tradition he becomes the anxious king of a heaven that enlightenment surpasses.

Modern Practice

Indra is called on for rain, for strength in a fight, and by rulers and their officers. His practice is loud, wet and seasonal; his caution is that a king who drinks too much soma is still a king with a thunderbolt.
