Mythology Summary

Mars is the Roman god of war and of the fields at once - the same god who broke the enemy defended the boundary of the farm, which is why his month opened the year of war and of sowing. He is the father of Romulus and Remus by the vestal Rhea Silvia, and his animals are the wolf that suckled them and the woodpecker that fed them. The March and the October Horse were his, the Salii danced his shields through the city, and his priest was the flamen Martialis.

Modern Practice

Mars is called on before a fight, a defence, or a season of hard work, and at the purification of a place or a field. His practice is disciplined rather than furious: the spear kept ready and the boundary walked.
