Mythology Summary

Mitra is one of the oldest Vedic gods, the god of friendship, contracts, oaths and the day, who with Varuna upholds rita (the cosmic order) - Varuna by night, Mitra by day. The Mitanni treaty of the 14th century BCE invokes him by name, and he is the Indian cognate of the Persian Mithra and, through the Hellenistic world, of Mithras.

Modern Practice

Invoked for honest dealing, friendship and the keeping of agreements.
