Mythology Summary
Amaterasu is the Japanese sun goddess, ancestress of the imperial line, who withdraws into a cave when her brother ravages her weaving hall and is drawn out by music and a mirror. She is the light that can be lost by offence and returned by laughter.
Modern Practice
Amaterasu is honoured at the shrine with water, rice and light, at dawn and at the solstice. Her practice is the mirror and the clean hall: keep the place fit for the light to return to.
