Mythology Summary

Inari is the Japanese god of rice, foxes, prosperity and sake, worshipped at tens of thousands of shrines under red gates, whose messenger is the white fox. Inari changes form and sometimes gender across the shrines, which the tradition accepts without difficulty.

Modern Practice

Inari is honoured with rice, sake, fried tofu and red gates. The practice is gratitude for what came in and the feeding of the foxes at the edge of the field.
