Mythology Summary

Marduk is the Babylonian king of the gods, who is given the fifty names after he kills Tiamat, splits her body into sky and earth, and makes the world from it. The Enuma Elish is his charter: order is not primordial, it is won from a corpse and held by a king.

Modern Practice

Marduk is called on for sovereignty, for the making of order out of a mess, and for the magic that belongs to legitimate rule. His festival is the New Year, when the epic is recited and the king's mandate is renewed.
