Mythology Summary

Neptune is the Roman god of water - springs, wells and running water before he is the god of the open sea - whose festival, the Neptunalia, fell in the driest heat of July, when the springs had to be kept alive. His temple stood in the Campus Martius by the Circus Flaminius, and as Neptunus Equester he was also Neptune of the horses, a Roman pairing of god and horse older than the Greek sea-god. The trident, the dolphins and the sea-palace came to him with Poseidon.

Modern Practice

Neptune is called on for water that has to be found, kept or crossed, for a voyage, and for the horse. His practice is humble plumbing: the spring cleaned, the well covered, the water shared.
