Mythology Summary

The primordial pair Ometecuhtli, Two Lord, and Omecihuatl, Two Lady, dwell in Omeyocan, the thirteenth and highest heaven, and from them come the four Tezcatlipocas and so the whole pantheon. The Florentine Codex and the Leyenda de los Soles also call the pair Tonacatecuhtli and Tonacacihuatl, Lord and Lady of Our Sustenance. The single name Ometeotl is rare in the sources, and the unified supreme Ometeotl of the modern books is largely a twentieth-century synthesis associated with Miguel Leon-Portilla, which recent scholarship has challenged.

Modern Practice

Ometeotl is worked as the source behind the gods rather than as one of them, for polarity, for the before of a thing, and for the practice of holding two truths at once. The entry is careful to say that this is a modern reading of a pair the sources actually name.
