Mythology Summary

Mary Magdalene is the follower of Jesus who stands at the cross and is the first to see him risen, and whom later tradition wrongly conflated with the unnamed sinful woman who anoints Jesus in Luke and with Mary of Bethany. In the gnostic texts she is the disciple who understands most and is resented for it.

Modern Practice

Mary Magdalene is called on by those who anoint the dying, and by anyone whose witness has been disbelieved. Her practice is the anointing and the testimony given plainly.
