Mythology Summary
Ops is the Roman goddess of abundance and of the resources the earth holds - her name is the common noun for wealth and plenty. She is the wife of Saturn and the mother of the great gods, and her two festivals mark the year's turning: the Opiconsivia of 25 August, when the harvest was brought in and stored, and the Opalia of 19 December, when the store was opened in the season of the Saturnalia. Her shrine, Ops Consiva, was in the Regia, and the Vestals and the flamen Quirinalis served at her rites.
Modern Practice
Ops is called on when something has to be stored rather than spent - grain, money, strength, a reserve for a lean season - and at the two moments of the year when the store is counted. Her practice is thrift with thanks: bring the first fruits in, and keep the rest.
