Mythology Summary

Pluto is the lord of the underworld, ruler of the dead and hidden wealth beneath the earth. Discovered during the rise of psychology, atomic power, and fascism, Pluto represents the power that transforms through destruction—the phoenix principle of death and rebirth. Pluto strips away what is false, confronts us with our shadow, and offers regeneration through radical transformation.

Mythology Summary

Pluto is the name Rome took from the Greek Plouton, 'the wealthy one' - the euphemism used because the lord of the dead was not named lightly. In Roman cult the same power is served as Dis Pater, whose altar stood in the Tarentum where the secular games were held, and who owns everything buried under the ground. He is the earth's dark half: the wealth that is mined and the seed that is buried before it grows.

Modern Practice

Pluto is called on in death work, at the closing of an account, and when something has to be put into the ground and left there. His practice is quiet and exact: the thing named, the offering buried, the silence kept.
