Mythology Summary

Circe is the enchantress of Aiaia who turns Odysseus' crew into swine and then, having been bested, becomes his teacher and host for a year. She is the ambivalent figure of the craft herself: dangerous, knowledgeable, and generous once the terms are clear.

Modern Practice

Circe is called on by workers of the craft for herb lore, transformation and the testing of a guest. Her practice begins with the same question she puts to every arrival: what are you, actually?
