Loviatar is the blind daughter of Tuoni who, in the forty-fifth runo of the Kalevala, is impregnated by the wind and bears nine sons, the nine diseases; she is the worst of Tuoni's children. Lönnrot split the older single northern death-power into Louhi and Loviatar, so the two are layers of one figure. The runo is also a healing charm: the diseases are named, cursed and driven out, which is the only way the tradition uses her.
Modern Practice
Loviatar is worked with only as the thing warded: the disease named aloud, the bitter herb burned, salt and bread left at the boundary, and the nine sons counted and sent away. She is called in order to be turned back, never to be asked for anything.
