Mythology Summary

Pele is the Hawaiian goddess who comes from the sea and digs the craters of Kilauea with her digging stick in search of a home, making the island as she goes and fighting her sister. She is creation by eruption and the land that is still being made.

Modern Practice

Pele is honoured at the crater with hula, chant and offerings of plants, and the tradition is explicit that the rocks are not taken home. Her practice is respect paid to land that is alive.
