Mythology Summary

Skuld is the third of the Norns, 'that which shall be', named with Urd and Verdandi in Völuspá 20 and Gylfaginning 15, and her name also carries the sense of 'debt' — what is owed. She has a second and separate role in Gylfaginning 36, where 'the youngest norn, Skuld' rides out with the valkyries to choose the slain, which is why she is sometimes counted among them. The sources give her no story of her own: her whole character is her name.

Modern Practice

Skuld is invoked at the end of things — the debt paid, the work completed, the consequence met. The practice is to settle the account rather than to renegotiate it, and to finish what was started.
