Mythology Summary

Urd is one of the three Norns who come from the hall beneath Yggdrasil - Urd, Verdandi and Skuld - and decide the fates of people (Voluspa 20; Gylfaginning 15). They water the world tree from Urdarbrunnr, the well that carries her name, and the sources add that there are other norns as well, of different origins. Her name is the past tense of the verb to become: that which has come to pass.

Modern Practice

Urd is the one to name when the work is about what is already fixed: modern practice speaks the situation aloud, then asks what can still be chosen, and the offering is water from a well or a spring. She is not asked to change the past but to show where its weight sits.
