Mythology Summary
Gaia is the Greek primordial earth, who comes into being at the beginning and bears the Titans, the Cyclopes and the monsters. She is both the ground and the first oracle, and her sanctuary at Delphi predates Apollo's.
Modern Practice
Gaia is honoured by tending ground rather than by asking for things: planting, composting, cleaning water, walking land attentively. She is called on for rootedness, for the defence of a place, and when an oath needs the earth itself as witness.
