Mythology Summary

Camazotz, Death Bat, is the bat of Xibalba in the Popol Vuh, the Kiche Maya account written in the sixteenth century: in the House of Bats, one of the six houses of ordeal, the brothers Hunahpu and Xbalanque are driven to shelter inside their blowguns, and Camazotz tears off Hunahpu's head, which the lords of Xibalba then use as the ball. The name is Kiche for death bat. He is a monster of a story, not a god with a temple, a priest or a festival.

Modern Practice

Camazotz is worked as an ordeal and a limit rather than as a patron: the dark place that takes something from you and the head you have to get back. There is no historical cult to reconstruct, so anything offered to him is modern framing and should be labelled as such.
