Mythology Summary

Terra Mater, or Tellus, is the Roman earth mother who receives the seed and the dead alike. Her festival the Fordicidia sacrificed a pregnant cow for the fertility of the fields, and her temple was one of the oldest in Rome.

Modern Practice

Terra is honoured by working ground: planting, composting, tending animals, and returning what is finished to the soil. She is called on for the fertility of land and for the dead who are buried in it.
