Each letter takes its place in the decimal series — aleph to yod 1–10, kaf to tsadi 20–90 by tens, qof to tav 100–400 — and the five final forms are counted as their base letters, so ם = 40 and not 600. A word's value is the sum of its letters. אמת = 1+40+400 = 441; יהוה = 10+5+6+5 = 26.
This is the reckoning every other table is measured against: an unqualified 'the value of X' in the literature means hechrachi. It produces the tradition's load-bearing pairs — echad and ahavah at 13, mashiach and nachash at 358, shaddai and metatron at 314 — and it is the reason the alphabet can be read as a number-line at all. When a handlist gives a value with no cipher named, this is the one to assume first.
