Chai is 'life', and 18 is the tradition's most practical number: gifts and donations are given in multiples of eighteen because the word for life is worth eighteen, and the toast is 'le-chaim', to lives. The same eighteen is the count of the blessings of the Amidah, the Shemoneh Esreh, so the prayer and the word share a number the tradition enjoys without claiming as its reason.
