Mythology Summary

Vesta is the Roman goddess of the hearth, whose flame in the Forum was tended by six virgin priestesses and never allowed to go out. She has almost no mythology and almost no image: her cult is a fire, a duty and a continuity, and her presence is the household itself.

Modern Practice

Vesta is called on for the home, for work that has to be kept going rather than finished, and at the turning of the year when the fire is renewed. Her practice is attention: tend the thing daily and it stays lit.
