Mythology Summary

Faunus is the Roman god of the forest and of prophecy, who gave oracles in dreams at his groves at Tibur and on the Aventine. His identification with the Greek Pan is where the word panic comes from; the name Faunus is not its root. He is the wild made vocal, and his Roman cult kept him at the edge of the fields.

Modern Practice

Faunus is called on for wild places, for dream-oracles, and at the boundaries of cultivated land. His practice is nocturnal and his answers are usually oblique.
