Mythology Summary

Jord is the earth herself, named as a goddess: the Prose Edda makes her Thor's mother by Odin, and the skaldic kennings call him Jord's son. The sources also name her Fjorgyn and Hlodyn, and her name is used throughout skaldic poetry simply as the word for land, so that the goddess and the ground are the same term.

Modern Practice

Jord is honoured where the soil is: modern practice gives her the first grain or the first water of a working and asks her for steadiness rather than increase. She is the ground the rite stands on, and Norse practice has little need to summon her.
