Neith is the predynastic goddess of Sais in the Delta, shown with the red crown and crossed bows over a shield, a creator who existed before the world and a mother of gods - of Ra in some texts and of the crocodile Sobek in others. She is a war and hunting goddess and a patron of weaving, said to reweave the world daily on her loom, and she is one of the four goddesses who guard the coffin and the canopic shrine. Her cult at Sais and Esna lasted into the Roman period.
Modern Practice
Neith is called for the defence of a boundary, for the making of cloth, and for the beginning that has no elder. In modern work the loom is the operative image: the world is not finished once, it is re-made each day.
