Mythology Summary
Gnostic divine wisdom, feminine aspect of God. Fell from Pleroma (divine fullness) through desire to know/create independently. Her fall created material world (sometimes seen as error, sometimes as necessary). Seeks redemption and return. Parallel to Lucifer pattern—descent through desire for knowledge/creation. Wisdom in exile seeking return.
Modern Practice
Patron of gnostics, those seeking divine wisdom, feminine divine practitioners. Invoked for gnosis work, understanding creation through fall, redemption seeking. Teaches that wisdom requires descent, that exile can be creative act, that return is possible.
Sophia is 'wisdom', the figure of Proverbs 8 and the term the Greek theologians use for the divine wisdom, and its 781 is used by modern writers to link her with the Kabbalistic Chokhmah. The link is real but lexical rather than numerical: the Septuagint translates chokhmah as sophia, and 781 and chokhmah's 73 are related by no cipher the tradition uses.
