Mythology Summary
Nekhbet is the Egyptian vulture goddess of Upper Egypt, the White One, who with Wadjet the cobra forms the Two Ladies (nebty) of the pharaoh's titulary. She is a goddess of kingship and royal protection, shown as a white vulture hovering over the king with the shen ring of eternity, and she presides at royal births and coronations; her cult centre was Nekheb (el-Kab). The vulture goddesses of Egypt are Nekhbet and Mut; Ma'at's emblem is the ostrich feather, not the vulture.
Modern Practice
Invoked for sovereign protection, the blessing of rulers and mothers, and the claiming of one's own authority. A protectress of women and children in modern Kemetic work.
