Garuda is the king of birds and the vahana of Vishnu, born to Kashyapa and Vinata and the eternal enemy of the nagas, whom he devours. In the Mahabharata he wins amrita from the gods to free his mother from slavery. He is a symbol of speed, strength, devotion and the solar principle, and gives his name to the Garuda Purana.
