Mythology Summary

Eostre is the Anglo-Saxon dawn-goddess whose name the Venerable Bede gives to the month of April (Eosturmonath); Bede is the only source for her. The spring-equinox festival and the hare and the egg are later and modern readings of the Easter customs rather than anything Bede attests: an old name given a new story.

Modern Practice

Eostre is kept at the spring equinox with eggs, hares, seeds and the first fire of the year out of doors. Her practice is to begin something visible and small.
