Mythology Summary

Anansi is the Akan spider trickster who bought all the stories from Nyame by catching four impossible creatures, which is why tales are called Anansesem. Carried across the Atlantic by enslaved Akan people, he became the surviving trickster of the Caribbean and the American South, teaching by wit rather than by power.

Modern Practice

Anansi is honoured by telling stories, especially at night and especially aloud. He is called on when the powerful have all the advantage: his practice is cleverness, patience, and the willingness to be laughed at on the way to winning.
