Mythology Summary
Tailtiu is the Irish queen who clears the plain of Breg for farming and dies of the labour, asking that her foster-son Lugh hold games in her memory. Those games are Lughnasadh, and the harvest feast is a wake for the person who made the field.
Modern Practice
Tailtiu is honoured at the first harvest and by any heavy clearing work. Her practice is the field made usable, and her offering is the first of what grows on ground that was won.
