Mythology Summary

Aine is the Irish goddess of the midsummer sun and of Knockainey hill, who is pursued by a mortal king and takes her revenge, and who is also the queen of the local sidhe. She is sovereignty in its double form: given, taken, and answered.

Modern Practice

Aine is honoured at midsummer with fire on the hill, and at the wells named for her. Her practice is the bonfire and the careful refusal: what is freely given is hers to give.
