Mythology Summary
Sigyn is Loki's wife. When the gods bind him with the entrails of his son Nari and set Skadi's serpent over his face, she stands beside him with a bowl and catches the venom, and only when she must empty it does it fall on him and make the earth shake (Gylfaginning 50; the prose close of Lokasenna). That is nearly all the record gives: no myth of her own, and passing notice in the Prose Edda's kennings.
Modern Practice
Sigyn is called by people who stay: carers, the families of the imprisoned or the addicted, anyone holding a bowl for someone who cannot hold it themselves. The practice is deliberately unglamorous - water, milk and flowers are set down without a request for relief.
