A note on this entry Source: Arbatel de Magia Veterum (Basel, 1575); English in Turner (1655), bound with the spurious Fourth Book, hence the frequent misattribution to Agrippa. Disputed: the legion count is given as four thousand in Waite against Ophiel's hundred thousand, a disparity the editions do not explain, and the pairing with the archangel Anael, and the identification with the planetary intelligence of Agrippa's Venus table, are later accretion. The Arbatel promises no love magic in so many words — beauty, copper-gold exchange and serving spirits are what it actually offers — so the love work commonly assigned to this spirit is an inference from the planet. The Arbatel does not assign the seven sexes and Turner's English calls each of them 'he'; the entry follows the text rather than reading the spirit of Venus as feminine. Element is Venus's element in this corpus, not an Arbatel doctrine.
