A circle with nine points on it and two inner figures: a triangle joining 3, 6 and 9, and a six-pointed path joining 1, 4, 2, 8, 5 and 7 in that order. Gurdjieff used it as a diagram of process, a way of showing that a sequence of events has law in it. The later personality typology that borrowed the figure reads the nine points as nine character structures, which is a different use of the same drawing.
Sacred Ratio
9 (and the repeating decimal of one seventh)
Construction
Divide the circle into nine and number the points 1 to 9 with 9 at the top. Join 3, 6 and 9 for the triangle. The inner path comes from dividing 1 by 7, which gives 0.142857 repeating: 1, then 4, then 2, then 8, then 5, then 7, then back to 1, so the path is that cycle laid on the nine points. The two figures together fill the circle.
