A note on this entry This is the doctrine that separates Jyotish from the Western house systems and it is not a simplification: the whole-sign bhava is the classical rule and the twelve bhavas have their own entries in this file. Two refinements exist and both are recorded rather than resolved - the bhava chalit chart, which re-draws the cusps by the Sripati method and is used by some schools as a corrective to the whole-sign reading, and the KP school's use of Placidus cusps with sub-lords. The Western quadrant house, the Vedic whole-sign bhava and the Sripati chalit chart are three different answers to the same question and the tradition holds all three.

Kind Concept
Sanskrit भाव
English the house Meaning A bhava is a house of the chart, one of the twelve fields of life, counted from the lagna. In the classical Parashari reading a bhava is a whole sign: the rising sign is the 1st bhava, the next sign the 2nd, and so on, so that a bhava has no cusp in the quadrant sense and no degree extent of its own.
