A note on this entry The ayanamsha is a choice, and the schools disagree: Lahiri (Chitrapaksha), the Government of India's standard, gives about 23 degrees 09 minutes for 1950 and 23 degrees 51 minutes for 2000 (about 24 degrees 12 minutes by 2025); Krishnamurti (KP) gives about 6 minutes less, roughly 23 degrees 45 minutes for 2000; Raman's value is smaller again by roughly 1 degree 20 minutes (about 21 degrees 45 minutes around 1950), being fixed so that his sidereal longitudes matched the panchangas he worked from; and Fagan-Bradley, the Western sidereal standard, gives about 24 degrees 45 minutes for 2000, the largest of the four. Six minutes is enough to move a planet across a sign boundary or a nakshatra pada, and therefore enough to change a dasha. The Surya Siddhanta's own doctrine is trepidation rather than uniform precession, which is why the classical texts do not give an ayanamsha value at all.
Alternate Names Ayanamsa precession offset the sidereal correction
Kind Concept
Sanskrit अयनांश
English the precession offset between the tropical and sidereal zodiacs Meaning The ayanamsha is the angle by which the tropical zodiac has precessed away from the fixed stars, and it is the number subtracted from a tropical longitude to give a sidereal one. Its value grows by about 50.3 seconds of arc a year, so it must be computed for the epoch of the chart and not taken as a constant.
