A note on this entry

Vedic aspects differ from the Western ones in three ways and the differences are doctrinal, not decorative. There are no orbs: an aspect is a whole-sign relationship, and BPHS ch. 26's 'speculum of aspectual values' grades it by degrees only as a refinement. There is no valuation of 90 degrees as hard and 120 as easy: Mars' 4th and 8th aspects and Saturn's 3rd and 10th are full-strength sights, not squares. And the nodes are given aspects by many authorities (BPHS's note on Rahu implies it) though the classical position is disputed. Beside graha drishti there is rasi drishti, the Jaimini sign aspect: movable signs see fixed signs at the 5th, 8th and 11th, fixed signs see movable signs at the 3rd, 6th and 9th, and dual signs see dual signs at the 4th, 7th and 10th (BPHS ch. 8), which is a different aspect scheme from the planetary one and is not interchangeable with it.

Alternate Names: Aspectgraha drishtirasi drishtithe sight of a graha
Kind: Concept
Sanskrit: दृष्टि
English: aspect; the sight of a graha
Meaning: Drishti is the sight a graha casts on another house or graha. Every graha aspects the 7th from itself at full strength; Mars additionally aspects the 4th and 8th, Jupiter the 5th and 9th, and Saturn the 3rd and 10th. The aspect is counted by sign, so a graha aspects the whole of the opposite sign and every graha in it, whatever the degrees.
