Orb Convention

Two incompatible conventions. Traditional: an orb belongs to each planet (Lilly: Sun 17, Moon 12, Jupiter 11, Saturn 9, Mercury, Venus and Mars 7), halved into a moiety, and two planets are in aspect when the distance is within the sum of their moieties. Modern: the orb belongs to the aspect (8-10 degrees for the majors, 1-3 for the minors).

Meaning

The allowance of degrees within which a configuration is treated as an aspect at all. It is a convention, not an observation, and the two main conventions disagree in kind: the traditional orb is a property of the planet and is halved into a moiety, so the permitted distance between two planets is the sum of their moieties; the modern orb is a property of the aspect and is applied uniformly.
