A note on this entry The name is used for two different things and the overlap is a real trap: Vyatipata is also the name of the seventeenth of the twenty-seven nitya yogas, the panchanga limb computed from the combined longitude of the Sun and Moon (see the nitya_yoga entry). The upagraha and the nitya yoga share a name and are computed from different quantities; the corpus records both rather than merging them.
Alternate Names Vyatipala the calamity point Vipata
Kind Concept
Sanskrit व्यतीपात
English calamity; the second of the Sun-derived upagrahas Meaning Vyatipata is the second of the Sun-derived upagrahas: subtract Dhuma from 360 degrees (add 226 degrees 40 minutes to it) and the result is Vyatipata. The name means a great calamity, and the upagraha is read as the point of sudden disaster in the bhava it occupies.
